I thought this was a terrific read and was amazed it was from a debut author. The story concept, which assumed an alternative reality of modern day magic as a normal way of city life, seemed so realistic I actually googled a couple of the words as terms Bayless created and was sad to see they weren't real. They should be. The central character, Lire Devon, has problems anyone could relate to with one big exception: she's a "touch" clairvoyant. As appealing as they may seem to some, it can also be a curse - to never be able to touch anything without experiencing the full impact of an object or a person's past. Nevertheless she aspires to use her power for good as a sucessful forensic investigator and becomes embroiled in a horrific serial murder case targeting only people endowed with magical abilities. Working against societal bigotry toward those who use magic and ultimately a formidable serial killer who baits her to catch him, Lire soon realizes she is in a fight for her life and the only way to survive is to take more risks with her own powers before they overwhelm her. I liked it and I think there's plenty here for a sequel.
