The story frequently jumps back and forth several years from chapter to chapter. The tense changes from first to third person and back again, sometimes in one chapter. This can be disorienting, but the characters are engaging enough so that this doesn't matter. Sometimes their actions veer into the grotesque, but they are saved from being caricatures by the author's affection for them. Many of them have what could be termed TV-movie-of-the-week "issues," but since they aren't given the typical pop psychology treatment and resolutions that often occur in fiction, the characters come across as weird but real.
