About the Subject Assessments
CSET™: Subject Assessment in the Mathematics examination
Purpose: The assessments are designed to test the knowledge and
competencies of prospective secondary level teachers. The question bank from
which the assessment is drawn is undergoing constant revision. As a result, your
test may include questions that will not count towards your score.
Test Version: There are three versions of subject assessment for Mathematics
tests in California. The Mathematics Subtest I (110) emphasizes comprehension
in Algebra and Number Theory; Mathematics Subtest II (111) in Geometry
Probability and Statistics; Mathematics Subtest III (112) for Calculus and the
History of Mathematics. The first two subtests taken together represent the
Single Subject Teaching Credential in Foundational-Level Mathematics
authorizing the teaching of general mathematics, algebra, geometry, probability
and statistics, and consumer mathematics. The Mathematics examination guide
is based on a typical knowledge level of persons who have completed a
bachelor’s degree program in Mathematics.
Time Allowance and Format: You will have 5 hours to finish the test. Part of
the test will consist of multiple-choice questions; part of the test will consist of
focused and extended constructed-response questions. There are 60 multiplechoice
questions and 8 focused constructed-response questions in the three
subtests. If you fail one part of the exam, but not the other, you only need to retake
the part you have failed.
Weighting: There are 24 multiple-choice questions and 3 focused constructedresponse
questions in Subtest I for Algebra; 6 multiple-choice questions and 1
focused constructed-response questions for Number Theory. There are 22
multiple-choice questions and 3 focused constructed-response questions in
Subtest II for Geometry; 8 multiple-choice questions and 1 focused constructedresponse
questions for Probability and Statistics.
Additional Information about the CSET Assessments: The CSET™ series
subject assessments are developed National Evaluation Systems. They provide
additional information on the CSET series assessments, including registration,
preparation and testing procedures, study materials such as three topical guides,
one for each subtest, that are all together about 107 pages of information
including approximately 57 additional sample questions
