Critical Education in the New Information Age (Critical Perspectives Series) By Manuel Castells * Publisher: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, Inc. * Number Of Pages: 184 * Publication Date: 1999-01-28 * ISBN-10 / ASIN: 0847690105 * ISBN-13 / EAN: 9780847690107 Product Description: Essays by some of the world's leading educators provide a revolutionary portrait of new ideas and developments in education that can influence the possibility of social and political change. The authors take into account such diverse terrain as feminism, ecology, media, and individual liberty in their pursuit of new ideas that can inform the fundamental practice of education and promote a more humane civil society. The book consolidates recent thinking just as it reflects on emerging new lines of critical theory. Contents: Introduction: Traumatizing Capital: Oppositional Pedagogies in the Age of Consent 1 Peter McLaren 1 Flows, Networks, and Identities: A Critical Theory of the Informational Society 37 Manuel Castells 2 New Educational Inequalities 65 Ramon Flecha 3 Education and Community Involvement 83 Paulo Freire 4 Border Youth, Difference, and Postmodern Education 93 Henry A. Giroux 5 Our Common Culture: A Poisonous Pedagogy 117 Donaldo Macedo 6 Labor Power, Culture, and the Cultural Commodity 139 Paul Willis Index 171 Summary: A collection of 1993-94 essays without thematic unity. Rating: 2 This is a collection of interesting, but largely unrelated, papers from a conference in Barcelona in 1994, which do not present a coherent analysis, and only marginally treat education in relationship to information technology. The title is misleading, and Castells is not the editor, but simply one of the contributors, writing on a topic alien to education. The reader from Atlanta writing a review on this site is absolutely right. Do not expect a book. Some of the articles, particularly the one by Freire, could be of your interest. Summary: nb! translation of 1994 Spanish original Rating: 1 This is not really a "1999" book, in case anyone is looking for the latest from Castells--rather it offers a translation of a collection of essays published in Spanish five years ago (and written a year or two before that, judging from the references). One would think this information should be part of the bibliographic description of the title.
