I am pleased to be able to introduce this book on "Coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical processes in geo-systems: fundamentals, modelling, experiments and applications" as the second publication in the Elsevier Geo-Engineering Book Series. The book contains the proceedings of the GeoProc2003 conference held at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, in October 2003. We do not anticipate that the Geo-Engineering Book Series will contain many such conference proceedings, but we have included these because of the extreme importance of the subject. In the past, different component disciplines within the overall geo-engineering subject area have separately used numerical modelling techniques with little interaction occurring between the disciplines. However, the principles of physics form a common basis for the component disciplines of radioactive waste disposal, general geo-systems, oil and gas reservoir engineering, geothermal energy engineering, geological systems, and geotechnical and environmental engineering. The physics is manifested in different ways according to the host rock conditions and the engineering perturbations. Thus, we should expect to see some convergence in approach in the numerical modelling and we should anticipate that cross-discipline interaction will provide fertile ground for moving the geo-engineering subject forwards.
