The computational biology of the heart is one of the most important recent applications of mathematical modelling in biology. The main research direction, and the most important for biological and medical applications, is the development of a realistic model of the whole mammalian heart. The realization of such a model has become feasible because of recent progress in nonlinear dynamics, the advance of computer technology, and experiments on cardiac tissue. This is the first book designed to provide a comprehensive and practical introduction for graduate students beginning research work on modelling electrical activity in cardiac tissue and the whole heart. It contains 12 chapters written by experts in different areas of the subject. The book covers all main aspects of whole heart modelling, from descriptions of single cells, to two- and three-dimensional models of cardiac tissue and the whole heart. It also gives a review of modelling for electro-cardiology and cardiac contraction. Finally, it includes recent experimental results on wave propagation in the whole heart. The book will be useful for a broad audience of researchers and graduate students specializing in the following topics: excitable media, nonlinear waves in biological and physicochemical systems, numerical methods of integration of nonlinear partial differential equations, biomechanics, cardiac arrhythmias, collective behaviour in biology, and self-organization.
