The study of alloys involves two main but interrelated areas of science: First, the determination of the electronic states in a material and the effect of these states on properties, and second the thermodynamic behavior of the material s as it arises in the study of phase transformation and phase evolution in time. Properti es like formation energy , electronic transport, magnetism, and mechanical behavior are intimately tied into the nature of electronic states. Kinetics of transformation , phase evolution and aging are the subject of thermodynamics. Both kinds of properties, however, are interconnected in that information extracted from one study is often applicable to the other.
