A Symposium on "Combinatorial Structures and t h e i r Applications" was held a t
V i l l a Madruzzo (Cognola d i Trento), on October 20 - 2 5 , 1980. The meeting was promoted
and sponsored by the "Centro I n t e r u n i v e r i t a r i o per l a Ricerca Matematica"
(C.I.R.M.) o f the "Universita d i Trento" f o r the purpose o f o f f e r i n g an intense
week o f j o i n t s c i e n t i f i c a c t i v i t y t o some outstanding s c i e n t i s t s and a group of
younger researchers. The enthusiastic co-operation o f a l l p a r t i c i p a n t s made t h e
Conference a great success.
Combinatorics i s an o l d branch o f mathematics. I n recent times the advent o f
the e l e c t r o n i c age and the development o f computer technology has given great i m -
petus t o the study o f combinatorial techniques, both by providing combinatorists
w i t h a powerful new t o o l and also by creating a new f i e l d of application f o r those
techniques. As always happens i n the development o f science the a b i l i t y t o answer
p r a c t i c a l questions i s g r e a t l y enhanced by the s c i e n t i s t making progress i n the
study o f pure theory. This gives a c l e a r j u s t i f i c a t i o n f o r the tremendous a c t i v i t y
and progress i n t h i s f i e l d .
Combinatorics covers too broad a range o f subjects and so a f u r t h e r r e s t r i c -
t i o n had t o be made on the topics t o be considered. It was decided t o confine the
main topics t o F i n i t e Geometric Structures and i n p a r t i c u l a r t o Galois Geometries.
Four l e c t u r e r s presented, i n a series o f i n v i t e d addresses, the State o f the
A r t i n p a r t i c u l a r f i e l d s . Many i n t e r e s t i n g new r e s u l t s were also given by a number
o f contributed papers.
A l a r g e p a r t o f the material presented a t the Symposium appears i n d e t a i l i n
t h i s volume. A few other papers r e l a t e d t o the topics considered have been adjoined.
We are confident t h a t many o f these papers w i l l form an invaluable basis f o r

f u r t h e r progress i n t h i s f i e l d .
I wish t o thank the d i r e c t o r s o f the C.I.R.M., Professor M. Miranda and
G. Zacher who organized the Symposium. Thanks must also be extended t o the
