michiman1's Full Review: Coin Worlds Coin Values Magazine Coin Values is a monthly magazine devoted to keeping coin collectors current on both coin values and the latest trends in the hobby. Although I have never subscribed to the magazine, I usually pick up a copy once or twice a year to keep myself informed.
The magazine was created by the editors of Coin World, a well known and trusted source for coin prices and news for years. Collectors and those with a possible future interest in the hobby will find this not only a solid price guide for making sound purchase decisions but also a place to check the pulse of the hobby.
More than half of Coin Values does just what the front cover suggests... gives readers a very comprehensive guide to every regular issue coin minted by the U.S. Mint. The values of most every type coin such as three cent and twenty cent pieces are included as well. The values for nearly every collectible grade will be found, a must when trying to make a purchase decision in a hobby so reliant on coin grading. While I refuse to count, the editors claim they provide more than 45,000 retail market prices in each issue. I'll take their word on it, it's expansive.
The coin value listings are concise and simple to follow. Most importantly, the MS and Proof values are listed in a number of grades. In the February 2007 issue, a 1913-S Indian Head cent, for instance, has valuation listings for MS60, MS-63, MS-64,MS-65 and MS-66. Values for the 1913-S cent in these grades range from $1100 to $10,000 depending on where in this spectrum you coin may fall. While I use a number of sources for my purchases, this is a handy one-step guide to keep at my fingertips, especially for high end purchases. I am not a full-time collector but do own a number of high end pieces which are primarily investment grade specimens. Unfortunately I can't enjoy the beauty of them due to high insurance costs which force me to store them at a local bank safe deposit box.
You won't find a plethora of ads for automobiles, appliances or make-up. What you may see are ads from some of the largest coin dealers in the country. Most readers will find the few ads available as a positive point for Coin Values seeing them as an opportunity to locate some of the rarer issues unavailable to them in their local markets. Over the years, through this magazine and it's ads, I have come into contact with two dealers which I now use to to fill my specific want lists.
The articles included in the magazine are what I see as a bonus to readers well beyond the expansive price guide section. As I mentioned, I usually pick up a copy only once or twice a year. I ended up with the February issue because I wanted to take a better look at the article on Seated Liberty Half Dimes than my time at the news stand offered. The information in that article as well as the follow-up on these coins in the Making The Grade section of the magazine were extremely helpful. Not only do articles like this keep readers current on trends but the article on grading was very detailed with excellent photos.
All the articles and prices are not designed for the high-end buyers. While February's article on collecting coins under $20 was a bit too basic for me, those new to the hobby may very well have taken away some valuable information.
Whether you're a coin collecting new-comer or a long-time collector with high-end tastes, Coin Values is a great choice. This magazine gives readers a great place to locate some of the biggest and most respected coin dealers in the country and an opportunity to locate coins unavailable in their area. In addition, informative articles on hobby trends and latest price listings are two more good reasons to pick up a copy and check it out. A real Epinions five-star rating on this magazine in my opinion.
