By 1893, the untamed American Wild West had all but disappeared. Indian wars were over, Sitting Bull was dead, Geronimo was in captivity, and frontier towns were turning into major cities. Pioneers and gunslingers, prevalent 20 years earlier, were being immortalized in legends and lore by Willa Cather, Zane Grey, and others. The twentieth century was approaching, filled with inventions, modern conveniences, gangsters, Las Vegas, Hollywood, Disneyland, world wars, space exploration, and high technology.
That period is a speck in Zeman's chronology of 25,000 years. Chronology of the American West begins at 23,000 B.C.E., when humans arrive on the North American continent, and ends with George W. Bush's election in November 2000. Zeman breaks the time line into four unequal but natural divisions: 23,000 B.C.E.-1502, 1502-1840, 1840-1932, and 1932-2000. The names he gives to these divisions accurately reflect the broad developments: "The Native West" for the original (human and animal) inhabitants and terrain; "The Imperial West" for the European explorers, settlers, and colonists; "The Incorporated West" for expansion and development of the U.S.; and "The Contested West" for the twentieth century. Within this framework, events are listed year by year and briefly annotated. Black-and-white illustrations and full-page sidebars on events, people, or places pepper the chronology and bring the history to life. Sidebar articles have further reading lists attached, and an extensive bibliographic essay follows the main text.
Zeman has produced a balanced, well-rounded chronology. Every effort has been made to capture the vast ethnic and cultural diversity that is so responsible for the region's unique flavor and character. Chronology of the American West is intended for everyone interested in the development of the West and is recommended for high-school, public, and academic libraries.
