Dow Chemical says it completed shutdowns of its Freeport, TX and Houston-area sites early this morning. Dow sites at Clear Lake, Deer Park, Freeport, LaPorte, Seadrift, and Texas City, TX, as well the Dow Haltermann site in Houston are all now secure. Dow¡¯s Houston business centers are also closed. Huntsman says it has suspended operations at Chocolate Bayou, Conroe, Dayton, Freeport, Port Arthur, and Port Neches, TX. Huntsman says it has also evacuated its headquarters and research and technology center in the Woodlands, TX. The closures will impact the production of butadiene, cyclohexane, ethylene, ethylene glycol, propylene, MTBE, propylene oxide, and amines and surfactants. Rohm and Haas has shut down its Bayport, Deer Park, and Lone Star, TX plants, as well as its Weeks Island, LA facility. All other facilities in North America currently remain operational. It has also placed its salt mine operations at Grand Saline, TX on standby. ¡°As soon as the storm passes through, we will assess any impact and get our facilities up and running again as soon as possible,¡± says Thomas L. Archibald, Rohm and Haas v.p. and director/operations and engineering. Celanese says it has closed its Bay City, Bishop, Clear Lake, and Pasadena, TX facilities, and as a result, its ability to supply customers will be impacted at least for the duration of the shutdowns. Chemical firms are also feeling an indirect hit from Rita¡ªCytec Industries says it shutdown its Fortier, LA plant last night due to supply disruptions along Rita¡¯s projected path. Hurricane Rita¡¯s winds have weakened slightly this morning to 135 MPH, but it is still expected to come ashore as a major hurricane, according to an advisory issued by the National Hurricane Center (NHC; Miami) at 10 am CDT today. The core of Rita is currently forecast to make landfall along the southwest Louisiana and upper Texas coasts¡ªnear major chemical production facilities in Port Arthur, and Beaumont, TX, and Lake Charles, LA--early Saturday morning, according to NHC. The storm was 210 miles southeast of Port Arthur at 10 am CDT and is moving southwest at 10 MPH, according to NHC.
