The plot is basically about a rich teenage girl with a tragedy in her past who acquires a Samurai bodyguard and how their relationship progresses while he protects her against an array of human and non-human adversaries.
I found it strangely erotic and wonderfully inventive but its true strength lies in the characterization. Each of the lead characters are multi layered who skilfully unfold as the tale progresses-often with surprising results. The Bitch Heiress herself is particularly strong, there's a hint of Lisbeth Salander about her (the girl with the dragon tattoo) and her Samurai Butler who protects her is something out of true myth- a despairing, bonded demon in human form paying a price for a tragic past whom human love redeems-even if that love appears to be unrequited (it isn't).
According to the blurb this novel is part of a new wave of Manga type tales entering the Western market, and as this is structured for sequels I predict the Yokai of Japan may soon be as commonplace as the vampires of Transylvania in places like Louisiana, New York, Maine, Seattle, and TV screens and films the world over.
