Bistatic radars have been on or lurking near the radar scene for almost 60 years. During this time about 200 bistatic radars became operational, with two known to be in operation as of this writing. They are the Space Surveillance System and the Multistatic Measurement System. As might be expected, bistatic radar literature
reflects this modest level of activity: a chapter or section on bistatic radars in a radar textbook or handbook, occasional papers or letters in professional journals, and on rare occasions a special journal issue devoted to bistatic radars or, as they are referred to when in their special netted configuration, multistatic radars. The last
such issue was published by the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) in December 1986 (Vol. 133, Pt. F., No. 7). One textbook on bistatic radars, Dispersed Radar Stations and Systems, was authored by V. Ya. Aver'yanov and published by Nauka i Tekhnika, Minsk, in 1978. It was machine translated into English in 1980, but never distributed outside of U.S. government agencies. Thus, it is unfortunately lost to the bistatic radar community at large. Perhaps someday Aver'yanov's work will become accessible and his contributions properly recognized. Until then he retains phantom recognition for the first bistatic radar textbook...
