The book gives you a great deal of backstory about a young soldier in Iraq named Evan, a mercenary soldier named Ron who worked for a private company providing security services, and the atmosphere around them. Evan was brokenhearted that his ex-girlfriend, Tara, had broken up with him over the war and confided in Ron, who seems like a good guy but you eventually learn that he is far from that. Ron goes after and gets Tara when he's back in the states and lies to Evan to make sure he doesn't contact her again. Evan is very seriously injured and transferred back home for care and rehabilitation. A lot happens after that (I don't want to spoil the story) and eventually Evan winds up in prison. Dismas Hardy is called upon to handle the appeal. So - it's true that Hardy and Glitsky aren't part of the book until half way through, but the story is extremely interesting. The characters of Evan, Ron and Tara are very real and you easily find yourself caught up in the story. Once Hardy and Glitsky appear, the story takes on a different character. Diz is trying to get another trial to get Evan off and Abe is looking into related murders that may have been committed by Ron or someone in the company he works for. The story reaches deeply into Iraq and the cover up of evidence reaches up into the FBI. It is tied up in a very clever way, if not a totally satisfying way to everyone involved. I loved the way Lescroart tells you some information you've been wondering about for half the book in the epilogue. I find him to be a talented writer who gets better with each book and would highly recommend this one.
