can sum this book up in three words - too many characters. Actually make that six - "far far far too many characters".
Set in the French ski fields this attempt at a disaster novel has plenty to like - a plausible plot, some high speed skiing action, death and destruction, daring rescues, along with the standard romance stuff.
But the author has gone overboard with his character map and setup of what should have been the guts of the story - the avalanche itself and its aftermath. We, the reader, don't need to spend 200 or more pages in meeting EVERYONE in the resort. And by "everyone" I mean the sleazy mayor, the hotel keeper (and his wife and mistress), the local avalanche expert, the mountain rescue team, the slope groomer, the ski lift manager, the young French skier attempting to win the "Diable" downhill (and his entire family), his opponents, the local doctor, the fleeing Russian millionaire, the overworked billionaire software developer and his daughter etc etc etc.........
Too many to care about. A pity, as "Avalanche", with the help of a good editor, could have been a really good read.
