This book is devoted to the investigation of a rather prevalent process in nature: interaction of atoms with electromagnetic radiation. Primary attention is given to the low and intermediate photon energy region, from tens to hundreds of electron-volts. Atomic photoionization cross sections, the angular distributions and polarization of photoelectrons, the energies of created vacancies and their lifetimes, the directions
of emission of products of vacancy decay are described in the Random-Phase Approximation with Exchange (RPAE) from a unique point of view. For completeness and coherency, hydrogen atom photoionization
and photoexcitation are also discussed in this book, and improvements and corrections to the one-electron approximation are considered, encompassing everything necessary for understanding and applying the methods of many-body theory.
