Introduction
The research necessary for the publication of my first book, Army Badges and Insignia of World War 2, left me with a great deal of additional information regarding the badges of the same armies used after 1945. I soon discovered that thousands of entirely new badges had been adopted in these last twenty-eight years and so became fascinated by this new field.
Although the publishers have agreed to add a few more pages of illustrations to the present book, I regret that space limitations, once again, have compelled me to deal solely with the regular armies, although some territorial badges have been included in particular cases when, by so doing, I could simplify the subject.
The reader will certainly realise that if I had attempted to illustrate all the British badges, including those of the territorials, little room would have been left for other armies, thus marring the original concept of this publication. I hope that in future I will be able to compile a separate book dealing only with the badges of territorial units, in the case of Britain worn since 1908, which will enable me to illustrate and describe all the changes and reorganisations that have taken place since then.
The translation of the N.C.O.s' ranks again presented an extremely difficult task, particularly with regard to the German ranks, and, as Germany is divided with two separate Armies, I had no choice but to refer to their original German-language titles.
I would like to thank the many readers who have written to me, and to the publishers, for showing their appreciation of my previous book.
G. Rosignoli
