Since I really loved the first book in this series I was worried about how the author would follow it up. I didn't have to worry, this second book in the series is just as good, if not better, than the first. The basic premise is that a police detective who was a big drinker and an admittedly lousy police officer, husband and father is now stuck on earth after he's died. No one can see or hear him and the book is told through his point of view. As with the first book, there is much introspection on his part about the mistakes he made in his life. He spends his time following his replacement on the police force as she works on cases. We really get to hear more of his voice and personality with this book and at times he is laugh out loud funny. The case that his replacement is working on drives the plot along quickly and could possibly have stood alone as a really good mystery. It is the dead detective's observations that really enhance the story and give it so much more depth. As some police cases can be a little gritty, so is the subject matter of the case they are working on in this book. This definitely amps up the tension but thankfully it is not overdone, as it easily could have been.
All in all this book really leaves the reader wondering, what if you could still see what was going on in your life after you're gone? The dead detective obviously has some lessons to learn and the reader is on the journey with him. I'm really looking forward to the next installment to see where this goes.
