There are currently several excellent advanced texts on organosulfur chemistry; however, there is no introductory book on the subject. It therefore appeared timely to write an introduction to organosulfur chemistry because of the tremendous expansion in this area over recent years. Organosulfur reagents have become of increasing significance in synthetic organic chemistry, and the commercial applications of organosulfur compounds have also greatly expanded. This book first outlines the role of sulfur in biological systems and deals with the special characteristics of organosulfur compounds and the major methods available for their synthesis. Later chapters are concerned with the chemistry of the major classes of organosulfur compounds and their uses in synthetic organic chemistry. The book ends with a chapter on the major industrial applications of organosulfur chemistry, especially in the production of medicinal and pest control chemicals and artificial sweeteners.
