The debts I have incurred in the process of writing this book are, as always, not only too numerous to acknowledge in a limited space; they are also too entangled in my intellectual life to be sorted out. Nothing that I have been given to think, as far as I can remember, has not had its origins in an intense classroom or personal conversation in the process of which the question becomes more important than the particular persons involved. But because I believe deeply that truly productive scholarship, whatever the case of the quality of my own, is collaborative, I want at least to express my gratitude to the graduate students who participated in those first seminars on the American culture industry's representation of the Vietnam War, especially Wei Wang, Lara Lutz, Cynthia Davis, and Erica Braxton. As remote as the matter of those seminars was to the historical context in which it here appears, this book had its origins in those intense classroom spaces and could not have been written without my students' unknowing contributions to the question we thought together.
