The origins of this book stem from a conversation held between us some five years ago, in which we pondered the many different approaches taken to unravel this enigmatic condition. In some areas, principally in the basic sciences, progress in the latter twentieth century appeared to be gathering momentum, whereas in others, notably in the more applied areas, progress appeared to be faltering. Perhaps such an observation could just as equally be applied to the study of so many other clinical conditions, yet what struck us in particular about amblyopia was how little interchange of ideas occurred between the various subdisciplines; put in colloquial terms, little appeared to be trickling down from laboratory to clinic, or indeed to be trickling up from clinic to laboratory.
