Product Description: This book seemed too good to be true. It seemed to have it all- conspiracies on a global level, involving UFOs, Nazis, Hitler's infamous bunker, Area 51, secret bases in Antarctica, black helicopters, computer hackers, and paranoid X Files fans. The hero is a troubled soul, trying to distance himself from his past as a hacker. He has an irresponsible friend who keeps getting him into trouble. There's a mysterious woman who is not all she seems. And then there's Prometheus. In a past life, Curtis Hatch released a benign, but hugely contagious, computer virus, and narrowly avoided prison for his troubles. As logic in the computing world goes, this made him a prime candidate for coding security programs for satellite systems. His life seems to be in perfect order until a friend dies in mysterious circumstances. The funeral starts him on a path to an adventure which quickly spirals way beyond his control. In the next few days, Curtis ends up at the DefCon hackers conference, places second in a hack competition, and then ends up in a million dollar contest searching for the origin of two short film clips from a conspiracy theory internet site. From there, it's a short skip to Area 51 and a stealth mission into a secret military base, with our mild mannered computer geek transformed into James Bond in a golf cart. Throughout the book, there are a lot of cleverly thought through episodes involving the darker side of computers, like accessing forbidden security systems, eavesdropping on others' computers, gaining control of a Star Wars type satellite system, and hacking the FBI's files. It is a very fast paced story, and is a compulsive page-turner. Forget sleep or work once you start reading this book, because it will have you hooked to the end. And then once you get there, you will be thoroughly disappointed. The ending is a real letdown. It is completely out of step with the rest of the story, being far too contrived and light hearted.
