In Hollywood, Michael Bay + Large Budget = Predictable Results. Science fiction is somewhat similar; throw in a scruffy but lovable band of explorers/mercanaries, pit them against some nasty adversaries and you get predictable results. However, much like a Michael Bay flick, this is by no means a masterpiece. Besides the previously noted grammar and spelling issues there are mile wide plot holes and a major lack of character development.
Having said that, I still found this book immensely enjoyable. The pace and tone are good, the overall premise is VERY promising for the sequels, and its lack of originality is compensated by a lively writing style and concise narrative. The author avoids the worst pitfalls of science fiction, the meandering monologues and philosophical abstraction of more established writers. There is no over thinking this book, (Ben Bova, I'm talking to you,) it is what it is and as such it's enjoyable.
