James Grippando's "Afraid of the Dark" is a literate thriller. It's a fast read, but well-written -- smooth writing, and nice style for this genre of book. I'm so used to crime thrillers having one-dimensional characters with almost no character development, but Grippando has fleshed out characters, psychological motivation, and a much richer style of story-telling and writing than the typical thriller. This is my first exposure to Grippando, and I would definitely reach for another one of his books over many other writers in the genre, knowing that, first, the man can write, and two, he puts together a good plot and storyline, and realistic, three-dimensional characters. His bringing in the issues of post-911 extremism and terrorism into this story's plot is particularly timely, and made the book feel fresh (compared to tired old Cold War and Russian plots favored by some suspense writers.) Overall, I'd recommend this for anyone who likes a well-written, well-plotted crime thriller.
