The idea that one can purge emotions by experiencing them intensely goes back at least to Aristotle (Poetics, Book 6 ) . He had taught that classic tragedy, by arousing feelings of pity and fear, allows the observer to achieve catharsis of those affective states. Over the years many psychologists have accepted the idea that feelings of anger and hostility may also be drained off through intense participation in behavior related to these emotions. Experimental studies of catharsis generally have been of two types. In one the subject is exposed to
aggression carried out by others, as in drama and violent sports. The studies along these lines, which embody the essence of the Aristotelian view of catharsis, have been discussed in several recent reviews (e.g., Bandura, 1973; Geen, in press), most of which have failed to support the Aristotelian position. These investigations
will not be covered in the present review. Instead, we shall concentrate chiefly on studies involving the other type of catharsis-that in which a subject who has been aroused to aggress is allowed to attack either his antagonist or some substitute target. We shall attempt to answer two questions: First, does such aggression reduce the attacker’s emotional arousal? And second, does this aggression make the attacker less likely to behave aggressively afterwards?
