There are quite a few books coming out this year that deal with myths; several of those are based on the Persephone myth. This one is the first I've read so far and I thought that it did a very good job of taking some elements of the legend and then creating something new. If you don't like your myths being played with, you might not be thrilled, but I for one was happy with the changes. First off, our heroine, Pierce, is not kidnapped and forced to live in the Underworld. At 15 she dies in an accident, visits the Underworld, catches the eye of John, but escapes back to the land of the living. She goes on to see John at different intervals, feeling hounded while he claims to be protecting her. Then, at 17, she and her mother move back to her mom's hometown, and Pierce begins to unravel exactly who John is and her own role in the story. Parts of the story are told in flashbacks, so it does jump around a bit. I didn't find it jarring, and the narrative flowed well for me. Pierce was an intriguing character. I found her to be fairly realistic; she is not the happiest character, but that is to be expected. She didn't come across as too bitter or cold, but did seem to strike a delicate balance. It was easy to get into her character. John comes across sometimes as wild or violent, and given Pierce's fear of going back to the Underworld, it takes some time for her, and through her the reader, to see the motivation behind his actions. I'm not saying I'm sold on the character or the relationship (just as I don't think Pierce is 100% invested), but I'm interested in seeing where Cabot takes him. I'm sure that there will be some stalker comments, but given the nature of the times that he actually interfered in her life, I don't think that's the case. This is book one of a trilogy, so it is definitely a set-the-stage book. We are left with a lot of questions, but I was drawn into the story and I want to find out what happens next.
