The renowned journal of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons gaming for the last 25 years is now available as a completely searchable CD-ROM. You can search for words, phrases, even juxtaposed words in any article printed in issues 1 through 250. You can even filter your search by year, issue numbers, title, or body text. The archive comes with a host of viewing options that are optimized for viewing text or art panels. Though the user interface is not compatible with the Macintosh OS, Mac gamers can read any of the articles with Adobe Acrobat.
In 1999 a compilation of the first 250 issues was released in PDF format with a special viewer including an article and keyword search in CD-ROM format. Also included were the 7 issues of "The Strategic Review". This compilation is known as the software title "Dragon Magazine Archive". Because of a conflict regarding the reprint rights for the "Knights of the Dinner Table" comic strips printed in Dragon for many years, the "Dragon Magazine Archive" is out of print and very hard to find.
This 5 CD set contains the first 22 years of Dragon Magazine as well as predecessor The Strategic Review. The PDFs are fully searchable without needing to install the included viewer program, but it's a nice addition. The viewer was designed to connect to an external server to download patches and updates, but this is has since been taken down. The most recent updates and errata are included in the /Patches and Missing Pages directory. While the scans are high quality, they are unfortunately at a mediocre resolution (one of the primary complaints about the Archive). This doesn't impact the articles much, but the comic pages do tend to suffer as a result. Still, this is an excellect collection for enthusiasts or anyone missing a few issues from their own personal library.
