A fascinating compendium of early-20th-century mechanical devices, this expansive work ranges from basic hooks and levers to complex machinery used in steam, motive, hydraulic, air, and electric power, navigation, gearing, clocks, mining, and construction. More than 1,800 engravings include simple illustrations and detailed cross-sections.
Summary: For those who likes ilustrations…
Rating: 2
There are a bunch of handmade ilustrations, but just a few explanations about the machanisms. Useful, but not that much…
Summary: Sometimes amusing , Sometimes too complicated & confusing..
Rating: 3
In this book, basic mechanisms are understandable when explained in a few lines, but more complex machines are not understandable easily, the figures are sometimes very small & unreadable… I would have prefered a modern style book, with big readable figures and more explained purpose of the machine, this one is actually very bad esthetically if you know what i mean.
Give it a try however, you might like it.
Summary: Interesting movements
Rating: 4
This book does indeed contain a large number of mechanical movements, and some of them are just fascinating as you look at them and try to figure out how they work. A lot of them are just like ‘So thats how they do that!’ The biggest drawback, and I may be prejudiced as amechanical tradesperson, is that some of the extremely interesting movements do not have enough detail. Other than this, a good way to lose yourself for a few hours at a time.
Summary: Excellent Reference
Rating: 5
This book was originally published in 1899 and reprinted and enlarged in 16 editions between that date and 1921.
It has a line drawing and a short description of a wide variety of all sorts of the mechanical things, steam engines, valves, and other pieces of technology. This will be of tremendous value to anyone exploring some of the lost technology from 100 years ago.
The drawings are clear and the text very useful.
I really recommend picking this up by anyone interested in the history of steam technology.
Summary: Fascinating view back in time to the steam era
Rating: 4
Great book, from the glory days of mechanical engineering. A pity it doesn’t have dates or more information on how some of the machines work. Essential if you are a mechanical inventor.
