101 Myths of the Bible: How Ancient Scribes Invented Biblical History By Gary Greenberg * Publisher: Sourcebooks, Inc. * Number Of Pages: 352 * Publication Date: 2002-09-01 * ISBN-10 / ASIN: 1570718423 * ISBN-13 / EAN: 9781570718427 Product Description: In his startling book, Gary Greenberg exposes the reality behind the greatest story ever told. Learn about the Egyptian myths and ancient folklore that survive in one of history's most sacred texts, and discover how: -King David's bodyguard, not David, killed Goliath -Noah's Ark did not land on Mount Ararat -Samson did not pull down a Philistine temple -There are at least two versions of the Ten Commandments -The walls of Jericho were destroyed 300 years before Joshua arrived there -Sodom and Gomorrah were mythical cities that never existed -The story of Esther had nothing to do with the Jews of Persia -And much, much more 101 Myths of the Bible provides a new dimension of biblical studies for believers, historians and anyone who has ever wondered about the facts behind the legends. By looking deeper into history, Greenberg shows that the true story makes the Bible more interesting than ever imagined! Summary: Interesting Questions Rating: 5 Brings up some interesting questions concerning where some of the language in the Old Testament. What I like specifically about it is how it brings in more of the Egyptian background, over what you normally get, which is a lot of Assyrian stuff. It makes a lot of sense to me that, seeing how the Israelites were in Egypt for generations, they would have picked up a lot from that culture. The eastern influences from Assyria and Babylon would have been much later. Summary: Bible Myths Rating: 4 By and large quite interesting, but in at least one spot inaccurate. On Pg 210, the author states the Israelites sang "the Song of Moses" which is a recap of the destruction of the Egyptian army in the Red Sea. He further states that the Hebrews only sang of the drowning of the soldiers, "In it there is no mention of the splitting of the sea." Then he uses Exodus 15:7 to prove the point, but he didn't read further. In Exodus 15:8 "And with a blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea." That sounds like a parting of the water to me. Now I don't believe it happened that way either, but if you want to make a point, don't stop reading the text you are quoting, but only as far as you want. Otherwise very illuminating and a fun read. Summary: What the Bible is really about Rating: 5 Gary Greenberg, who is president of the New York Biblical Archeology Society, explains how most of the stories in the Old Testament were actually derived from earlier Egyptian and Sumerian myths, with many of the gods being converted into human characters to fit the monotheistis belief system that the ancient Hebrews had gradually evolved from their polytheistic roots. I'd recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand the Bible in the context of how it was actually written. Summary: Intelligent Designers are out in force. Rating: 4 The previous reviewer has obviously been brainwashed with "Intelligent Design" or "Creationist Science", which is to say "no science". Really, the flood of Noah was proven by science? Oh you mean ID science, which is to say made up science. Intelligent Design is scoffed at by traditional science because it's about telling lies in order confuse the uneducated that there is verifiable proof of an intelligent creator. Which there is absolutely ZERO. Its all fantasy. This book just tells the truth and of course any zealot by his very nature is going to attack it. Summary: The wow of now thinking Rating: 1 This book makes assumptions that are so not true. There are today the exact sites af Sodomon and Gamorrah. The flood has been proven to be at the exact time in history as recorded in the Bible. Every year more and more of the Bible places and Kings are substantiated. This author is trying and lying to disprove the Bible using myths that are orally passed down and have no truth at all. How sad that because ir is in print some will take this as truth.
