This book has been written primarily for students in courses leading to the Diploma in Technology in physics, engineering or mathematics, but it is hoped it will be of use to all who require an understanding of vector analysis for the reading of textbooks, technical reports and research papers. It aims at providing the mathematical background necessary for the understanding of those theories in applied science which are commonly expressed in vector form, and suggests why these theories have led to the development of vector analysis. Except in Chapter 6 which deals with the Newtonian mechanics of a system of moving particles, it does not give a systematic exposition of these theories. Readers concerned with mechanics could refer to this chapter immediately after reading Chapter 3.
Each chapter contains a substantial number of worked examples in order to show vector analysis in action, to amplify points made in the text, and to develop techniques. They have also been used to develop all the three-dimensional geometry needed by most applied scientists, and to derive a number of results used in subsequent chapters.
