Our hero is Merrick and he's a real swashbuckler. He's a member of the Order of the Round Table, which is a secret society of men who hunt the monsters (including the human variety) plaguing the city. When he recruits young Tommy to move in with him and become his apprentice, things get hectic. See, Tommy comes with some baggage. Namely, the rest of the Wapping Street urchins. Merrick can't possibly handle his instant family alone, so he calls on the lovely Miss Caroline Bristol to help.
I really enjoyed this book so much. The children added merry mayhem to the tale, and the love story between Merrick and Caroline was filled with tension and fun. It also had a feminist sensibility that I loved.
