Too many James Bond references. One gets the impression that Stross wants to be the 21st Century James Bond writer, where the hero is a computer nerd who still gets the girl. I think written literature should stand on its own without the need to refer to popular movies or TV.
Bond's relationships with women are demeaning and trivial. Stross has much too much talent and I hope his writing grows beyond the Bond format.
Cliche? Every page. Many repeated. Who is editing these books?
Still, I love this author. Stross is exciting to read. His ideas are possible and some are likely to come to pass, so we should be paying attention. The beginning through middle is strong in each book, then I become bored as he brings his plot to its climax.
